Smilin' Rylen Parking Passes
In 2017 our lives came to a crashing halt as we spent over a week in the Houston Medical Center at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital with Rylen. With the help of a little tiny ORANGE chip, our lives were impacted and empowered in such a way, that we knew it truly was a God send. You see, this small tiny parking chip we received from Emma's Hugs was gifted to us through our social worker, allowed us to come and go as needed, get food and clothes, stop in and out for quick visits to our home that is far from the hospital, and even moments to just get out of the hospital and to just breath for a moment. This chip truly was life-altering as it allowed our family to focus on what we needed to focus on, and not have to worry about parking. We knew we wanted to be able to share this gift back to others possibly in the same situation.
Starting in 2018, Emma's Hugs became a beneficiary of The Smilin' Rylen Run. Emma's Hugs was founded in memory of sweet little Emma Dunnam when she was a patient in the Houston Medical Center. After Emma's family had their parking paid for by a complete stranger, they knew they wanted to do the same for other families during their stay in the medical center.
In 2017 Emma's Hugs was our stranger who donated our life changing parking chip that covered approximately a weeks worth of parking. And we were blessed with this gift. Over the years we have been fortunate to donate a portion of our proceeds to this charity that helped us and alleviated a simple but not normally thought about burden...Paying for Parking long term in the Houston Medical Center.
This past year we came to find out that Emma's Hugs was closing its doors and would no longer be providing parking passes for the medical center. As this was such a small but important part of our time with Rylen we spoke with members of the board at Emma's Hugs to see if they would be okay with The Smilin' Rylen Foundation picking up and carrying on this deed that supports our community and families in crisis. Through helping families in crisis we are able to honor what Emma's Hugs started. And now we can spread that seed that was planted with Emma's family that grew and share new seeds to others and now we get to help watch it grow in helping serve our community and those in need.
